Dr. Jack Mustard helps first graders choose books they will enjoy reading at home.
Mesa Verde Students Receive Gift of Reading through Donated Books – Earlier this spring more than 2,700 books were donated to AISD by attendees of a downtown music festival and patients of the Mustard Wellness Center. Mesa Verde first and fifth graders had the opportunity to choose a book to take home with them and meet the organizer of the book drive, Dr. Jack Mustard, earlier this week.
“The kids were very excited about getting a gift, especially a new book,” Kristi Moore, Mesa Verde first grade teacher says. “They took their books home with them and some of them told me their parents read the books to them that night.”
On average, students in elementary schools should be reading about 30 minutes a day outside of school. Reading comprehension is higher in students who read regularly outside of school. Many families choose to practice their reading before bedtime to help everyone settle down.
“Our students read every day, and should be reading at home every night,” Nikki Adams, Mesa Verde fifth grade teacher says. “It helps them to become stronger readers and hopefully will help them develop a love for reading.”
